The retina is the sensory membrane and thin layer that lines the inner surface of the back of the eyeball. It's composed of several layers, including one that contains specialized cells called photoreceptors. It is located near the optic nerve. Retina receives light that the lens has focused, converts the light into neural signals, and sends these signals on to the brain for visual recognition.
